Character Trait System

Every lens is mapped with character traits — flare, bokeh, distortion, sharpness and more. Lab-tested lenses carry verified traits; analysed lenses carry research-based traits that may be less precise.

What Are Character Traits?

Character traits are a classification system we developed to map the personality of every lens. Each trait describes a specific optical behaviour — from how the bokeh renders to how the lens flares — giving you a standardised way to compare vastly different lenses. Traits are organised into logical groups like Flare Characteristics, Bokeh Disc, Core Character, and more.

How Traits Are Assigned

For lab-tested lenses, traits are determined through our controlled testing process and are highly accurate — they've been physically verified with real imagery. However, lenses that haven't been lab tested can still carry character traits. Once a lens has been analysed — using manufacturer data, community knowledge, AI-assisted research, or a combination of all three — traits are populated to give you a general sense of that lens's character. These research-based traits are useful, but they may not be as precise or complete as those from a lab-tested lens.

Accuracy & Completeness

It's important to understand that character traits on non-lab-tested lenses are not guaranteed to be fully accurate or complete. They represent our best assessment based on available information, but they haven't been physically verified under controlled conditions. As lenses move into lab testing, their traits are refined and updated with verified data. Think of research-based traits as a helpful starting point, and lab-tested traits as the definitive reference.

The Full Trait Hierarchy

Every character trait uses a defined scale from one extreme to the other. Below are four examples showing the complete hierarchy for Flare Strength, Bokeh Texture, Spherical Aberration (Glow), and Focus Breathing. Each lens is assigned exactly one value from each scale — the same colour-coded glass badges used throughout CineTraits.

5Very Dense
Bokeh Overall Character

Focus Breathing

Hovering Over Traits

Wherever you see a character trait badge — on lens detail pages, in the Database, or in comparison tables — hover over it to see a detailed tooltip. The tooltip shows the trait name, description, and the full hierarchy with your lens's position highlighted. This gives you instant context without navigating away from the page you're on.

Using Traits to Find Lenses

In the Database, you can filter and sort by any character trait. Looking for lenses with warm flares and smooth bokeh? Filter for those traits and instantly see which lenses match. You can also use the AI Deep Discovery search to describe the look you want in natural language — it searches across all traits to find matching glass.

Trait Reference Guide

For detailed explanations of every trait, what each value on the scale means, and visual references, visit the full Character Traits reference page from the Knowledge Base in the navigation bar. Each trait page includes descriptions for every possible value, example lenses, and reference imagery where available.
